When Walmart took over 122 Woolco stores in 1994, “it was a much simpler time,” said Luke Sklar, founder and partner at Toronto-based market research firm Sklar Wilton & Associates when few consumers had the option to applaud, rumour-monger or complain online.

“Target is a great retailer and there are high expectations, but I think they are going to do well,” he said. “They have been very transparent about what they are doing and they are a strong seasonal retailer — so let’s see them get through a few seasons.”
